Joiseph
Jois, Burgenland, Austria
The Joiseph project started its life in 2015 as a collaborative project between viticulturists Richard Artner and Alex Kagl, and winemaker Luka Zeichmann. Whilst Luka is no longer involved, the philosophy of the project remains unchanged.
All of the vineyards are near or around the town of Jois, just north of lake Neusiedl in Burgenland - 'See' means Lake in German, so Jois-'see'-ph is sort of a play on words and represents a fictional character.
2015 was their very first vintage, and also their very first time making wines with all of their local varieties. Today they farm around seven hectares planted with Gruner Veltliner, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, Welshriesling, Neuburger, Muskat Ottonel as well some old field blend vineyards with various other local grape varieties.
Richard continues to be the main viticulturist in the Joiseph team. His work in natural farming, cover crops as well as collecting local plant seeds throughout the year to bring a native variety to their seed mixes is highly inspiring.
In the cellar, following on from Luka’s departure they have enlisted the skill and expertise of Andi Nittnaus to help them with the vinifications. We look forward to this new chapter for Joiseph and being part of their renewed vision.
