Entre Vinyes
L’Arboç, Penedes, Spain
Entre Vinyes is the beautiful collaborative project between Maria Barrena (of Azul y Garanza) and her partner Josep Tort. They met in 2007 and eventually started a family and settled in the region of Penedes, where Josep comes from.
In 2010 they had the opportunity to take over a set of very old parcels from Josep’s father, which would have otherwise been sold to a local cooperative. These included 5.5 hectares of very old vines (80+) of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada located in the middle of a natural park and forest called ‘Foix.’ The project has since grown to over fifteen hectares but these initial parcels remain their most prized.
As with Maria’s other project ‘Azul y Garanza,’ organic viticulture and biodiversity are crucial in ensuring the integrity of the wines. In recent years they have also experimented with biodynamic principles and intend to roll this out across the entirety of the estate.
Their first vintage was in 2012, and at the time it consisted of mainly two different Cavas. Whilst these still remain very important wines for them, over the years the range has expanded greatly and now features pet nats and various still wines including a whole range of skin contact wines as well as old-vine single vineyard expressions. In 2018 they were able to build their own winery, a project that was a catalyst for all their recent experiments. The winery is in the middle of one of their parcels, or ‘Entre Vinyes’ meaning ‘in between the vines.’
Maria and Pep are truly some of the warmest humans we know, and we believe that this infectious energy makes it into whatever they create. Tasting through their wines is consistently as joyful an affair as spending time in their company.
