Domaine Tessier
Cheverny, Loire, France
Domaine Philippe Tessier is a quietly iconic estate in Cheverny, long regarded as one of the leading voices in the appellation. While the region itself has often flown under the radar, the Tessier family have been instrumental in showing just how compelling these wines can be when handled with care, precision, and a deep respect for the land.
Founded by Philippe Tessier in the 1980s, the domaine quickly built a reputation for its purity and energy, with Philippe working organically from an early stage — well before it became the norm. His approach was always rooted in observation and intuition, favouring low-intervention methods both in the vineyard and the cellar, and allowing the character of each site to come through clearly.
Today, the estate is in the hands of his son, Simon, and wife Marie, who have seamlessly taken up the mantle while gently evolving the domaine’s direction. There’s a natural continuity to their work — nothing feels forced or overly reworked — but there is a noticeable sharpening of focus, an added layer of precision in both farming and winemaking.
In the winery, the philosophy remains one of restraint, and élevage is tailored to the wine — ranging from stainless steel and concrete to old oak barrels. The aim is never to imprint, but rather to guide, allowing the wines to retain their natural freshness, texture, and sense of place.
Under Simon and Marie, Domaine Philippe Tessier continues to do what it has always done best: produce honest, expressive wines that capture the understated beauty of Cheverny. The wines themselves are beautifully poised. There’s a clarity and brightness that runs through the range, but also a quiet depth — they are wines that feel both effortless and considered, equally suited to immediate drinking or a few years in the cellar.
